The campaign “Banco Santander without arms” presented Santander with a diploma for being the second highest investor in the arms sector among the Spanish financial entities and revealed Santander’s important role in the production and commercialisation of arms around the globe. Its contribution of over 1000 million Euros in the last decade to the production and commercialisation of arms, which is directly responsible for human rights violations and millions of deaths throughout the world, was also denounced. Faced with this charge, Mr. BotÃn, head of the Santander Group, merely stated his personal disagreement and categorically denied the accusations, though without giving any argument to justify his words or proof to the contrary of the accusations.

During the meeting, a representative of the MAB condemned Santander in her speech (4) for contributing to the destruction of the Amazon since 2008 through its participation in the financing of a mega-hydroelectric power plant in Santo Antônio. The social and environmental damage caused by this project are extremely worrying to this day, given that most of the people who have lost their homes have not been compensated and that more than 3000 fishing families have been driven to abject misery by the disappearance of fish in the area of the dam. Faced with this charge, Mr. BotÃn merely stated once again that Santander complies with the norms and treaties regarding the environment.
Como venimos haciendo desde hace cuatro años, este año queremos volver a participar en la Junta de accionistas del Banco Santander que se celebrará el 30 de marzo de 2012.

La campanya Banc Santander sense armes, integrada pel Centre Delà s d'Estudis per la Pau, de JustÃcia i Pau, l'Observatori del Deute en la Globalització (ODG) i la Federació de SETEM, i comptant amb 300.000 accions delegades, ha participat el 17 de juny, per quart any consecutiu, a la Junta General d'Accionistes del Banc Santander.
L'objectiu d'aquesta intervenció en la Junta d'accionistes ha sigut denunciar davant de tots els assistents les inversions en el sector armamentÃstic d'aquesta entitat financera, fent esment especial de les inversions en municions de dispersió, armes nuclears i d'urani empobrit. El Sr. Emilio BotÃn, president del Banco Santander, ha respost negant les acusacions, però sense donar cap argument ni prova que demostri el contrari.

El próximo 17 de junio el Sr. Emilio BotÃn, presidente del Banco Santander, anunciará en su Junta de accionistas de 2011 que esta entidad financiera ha conseguido un beneficio de 8.181 millones de euros en 2010.
Desgraciadamente una parte de este beneficio proviene de inversiones en armamento.
El objetivo de nuestra intervención en la Junta de accionistas es denunciar ante todos los asistentes las inversiones en el sector armamentÃstico de esta entidad financiera, asà como otras prácticas reprobables desde un punto de vista de derechos humanos o medioambientales.
Es para ello que pedimos la colaboración de los señores y señoras accionistas mediante la cesión de sus acciones.

La Campaña Banco Santander sin armas se felicita por el hecho que el Banco Santander se haya desprendido de su participación en Expal (Maxam Corp.), productora de explosivos, minas, municiones, bombas de fragmentación y carcasas, que tiene una producción 100% militar. Esta empresa ha producido, hasta que se lo prohibieron, minas antipersonal y bombas de racimo.
